14 Fabulous Uses for Honey

Honey is More than Just a Sweetener

Honey has been used since ancient times for many more things than we use it for today.  From healing salves to sweeteners, honey is a golden liquid that can be exceptionally versatile.  Here are some of my favorite ways to use honey.

1.  Ginger Honey Lemon Tea

When I start to feel sick, Ginger Honey Lemon Tea is my go-to beverage.  A 1 inch knob of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced, is placed in a cup.  Lemon slices are added and about 2 tablespoons of my favorite local honey.  I fill the cup with boiling water and inhale the steam as I stir it, then when it cools enough, I drink the tea.  It’s nothing short of amazing.

2.  Honey Lip Balm

I love making my own lip balms with honey.  All it takes is a bit of almond or olive oil and beeswax and you’ll have amazing lip balms in minutes.  Warm ¼ cup almond oil in a double boiler.  Add 1 teaspoon of honey and stir until it melts into the oil.  Add flaked beeswax, a little at a time, until the mixture coats the back of a spoon when cooled slightly.  Pour into little containers and you have a fantastic all natural lip balm!

3.  Halt Allergies with Honey

It’s been said that eating a tablespoon of local honey produced within a 5 mile radius of your home can help alleviate pollen based allergies.  I’ve done this daily during the high pollen season and had great results.

4.  Make an Herb Infused Honey Moisturizer

Honey is a fantastic moisturizer.  Making an herb infused honey moisturizer is simple.  Place a tablespoon or so of dried herbs in a clean, dry jar.  Add a cup of honey and cover tightly.  Allow the honey to absorb the herbs for about a week.  Mix a tablespoon of the herbed honey to your favorite unscented moisturizer and mix well for a beautifully scented lotion.

5.  Use Honey as an Antimicrobial on Cuts

Honey is a natural antimicrobial agent, so next time you have a cut, smear a bit of honey on it and cover with a bandage.  You’ll heal easily with an infection.

6.  Make Your Hair Shiny with Honey

Mix a teaspoon of honey with a quart of warm water.  Pour it over freshly washed hair and allow it to soak for a few minutes before rinsing.  You’ll have shiny manageable hair that looks beautiful.

7.  Make Your Own Sports Drinks with Honey

Honey gives you a natural power boost when working out or playing sports.  Try making your own sports drinks with a cut lemon and a tablespoon or two of honey mixed into water.  You’ll have a fantastic drink without all the salt and chemicals of the store bought stuff.

8.  Get Rid of Pimples Naturally with Honey

Got a pimple?  Dab some honey on it and let it sit for about half an hour.  Rinse it off with warm water and your pimple will disappear.

9.  Swap Out Your Sweeteners with Honey

Swap out your artificial sweeteners or white sugar for honey.  Honey can help lower your blood sugar and it’s all natural, which beats artificial any day.

10.  Make an All Natural Bath Softener with Honey

Pour warm honey over dried rose petals, allowing it to sit for a week or more.  Place a few tablespoons of the resultant scented honey in your bath for smooth, soft skin that smells beautiful.

11.  Pack Honey in Your Emergency Kit

Honey never goes bad.  It has been found, still edible, in tombs in Egypt thousands of years after being sealed in.  Pack a large jar of honey in your emergency kit for a great sweetener, power booster, and delicious snack.  Who said emergency kits need to have boring food?

12.  Honey Makes a Great Cough Syrup

My grandmother always made me a homemade cough syrup out of equal parts of honey and freshly squeezed lemon juice.  She heated it up on the stove just until the honey mixed in, then she’d bottle it after it cooled.  A tablespoon of that was perfect to soothe my throat and cough without the icky flavor of commercial varieties.

13.  Use Honey on Burns

Don’t you hate it when you burn yourself on the stove?  Rub a little honey on it, let it sit for 10 minutes, then wash off with cool water.  Your burn will fade away quickly and take the pain with it.

14.  Let Honey Help You Sleep

If you have trouble getting to sleep at night, try taking a teaspoon of honey.  It helps regulate your hormones and let you sleep through the night.

Finding Delicious Honey

Finding local honey can be pretty easy.  Check with your local extension office for a list of beekeepers in your area.  Most will sell the honey that they harvest.  You can also find local honey at farmer’s markets and orchards.  You’ll have a delicious honey that’s all natural and you can support your local economy!

    You are so right about taking local honey daily for allergies. I have my whole family take it every day and so far this year, we have been virtually allergy free! I know it helped me so much last year, I didn’t need any commercial allergy medicine at all. I also find that once I switched from commercial honey to local honey, I can no longer stand the taste of commercial honey. Local honey ROCKS!!!!

  5. These are great tips! I’ve used many of them, but I never heard of honey as a sleep aid.

    One of my favorite uses of honey is as an antibacterial face wash.

    About #7: There is a good reason for salt in sports drinks: Your body loses salt when you sweat, and if you’ve lost too much you may feel tired or faint after exercising because your blood pressure will drop too low. Salt also helps you to retain and use the water you drink. I sometimes use honey in place of sugar in my homemade sports drink–but it is hard to get it to stay mixed into a cold drink.
