Making Olive Garden Breadsticks at Home Easily

It doesn’t take anything special to make Olive Garden Breadsticks at home. I simplify things by using my stand mixer, but they could easily be made by hand in a bowl. Even if you’ve never made bread before, these breadsticks are easy and quick to make. The one trick to making any yeast bread is to have a warm room to rise the dough. It will make things go quickly and easily whether they are Olive Garden Breadsticks or your favorite whole grain bread.  The special secret though, is the butter and garlic salt mixture that is brushed over the breadsticks before and after baking.  It adds so much flavor to the breadsticks, you will be amazed at how perfect they are with any meal.

  • 1 T yeast
  • 1 ½ C very warm water
  • 2 T sugar
  • 4 1/4 C flour, plus more for rolling
  • 2 T butter, softened
  • 1 T salt
  • 3 T butter, melted
  • ¾ t garlic salt


  1. Place yeast, water, and sugar in a large glass measuring cup. Mix and allow to foam.
  2. Place the flour, 2 T softened butter, and salt in a large bowl or bowl of a stand mixer. Add the yeast mixture and stir until a soft dough forms.
  3. Turn out onto a clean counter or pastry board, dusted with flour. Knead for 3 minutes, adding flour until dough is no longer tacky.
  4. Form dough into a log. Cut in half. Cut each half again, then into quarters so each half is in 8 pieces.
  5. Roll each piece into a 7 inch rope and place on a greased cookie sheet. Cover with a clean towel and let rise about 30 minutes in a warm place.
  6. Heat oven to 400 degrees F.
  7. Mix the garlic salt with the 3 T melted butter. Brush over breadsticks.
  8. Bake breadsticks for about 15 minutes, until golden brown.
  9. Brush the breadsticks again with the remaining garlic butter.
  10. Serve Warm.

Extra Olive Garden Breadsticks Dough? Freeze for Later!

This recipe makes 16 breadsticks. If you don’t need that many you can make the whole amount, form breadsticks, then freeze them on a cookie sheet. When frozen, slide Olive Garden Breadsticks into a freezer bag or wrap them in plastic wrap then in aluminum foil. When you’re ready to bake them, let them thaw and rise a little bit and then bake them as usual. Fresh Olive Garden Breadsticks, any time, any day!
