Homestyle Chicken and Dumplings

Easy Homestyle Chicken and Dumplings

Nothing is more homey and feel-good than Homestyle Chicken and Dumplings.  Thick, rich gravy, filled with chicken, celery, and carrots, cover wonderful dumplings, making Homestyle Chicken and Dumplings one of my favorite go-to meals when I want something to stick to my ribs.  I love to make this dish in the middle of the day, like my great-aunt did, when everyone comes in from working in the yard and the garden.  It’s a great way to give them a boost of delicious energy, to keep them going all day.  Homestyle Chicken and Dumplings remind you of simpler times, with family, and friends gathered around your table.

Interesting Ingredients in Homestyle Chicken and Dumplings

I cheat a bit with my Homestyle Chicken and Dumplings.   Fresh carrots and celery simmer with the chicken, creating a broth that is amazingly hearty.  I try to use boneless chicken in this recipe, as it makes using the broth easier when you don’t have to pick out all the little bones.  When simmering the chicken, adding a little lemon juice adds a fresh flavor and tenderizes the chicken as it cooks.  I don’t make my own gravy, as I rely on some condensed soup to add extra flavor.  Cream of Chicken soup is one of those that I don’t eat as soup, but it makes a great addition to many recipes.  Garlic simmers in the gravy, bringing an earthy flavor that is wonderful.  The dumplings are simply made from Bisquick, and make a hearty addition to the melding flavors.  Homestyle Chicken and Dumplings are a combination of some interesting, yet tasty ingredients that come together to make the best pot of stew you’d ever want to eat.

Making Chicken and Dumplings Ahead of Time

If you are running short on time during the week, have no fear!  You can make Homestyle Chicken and Dumplings ahead of time and freeze them if you like.  Or make the base on a weekend, ready to eat later in the week.  Before adding in the Cream of Chicken soup, allow the base to cool completely and either refrigerate or freeze for later.  About a half an hour before you are ready to eat, bring the base to a simmer.  Add in the soup, bring back to a simmer, and add the dumplings.  You’ll have a steaming pot of Homestyle Chicken and Dumplings in no time!
