My hair is VERY over-processed.  I dye my hair blonde and have to go in for touchups every 5-6 weeks.  :(  That is not good on your hair.  So I have some really, really dry areas and on top of that, I am losing my hair at my bangs area.  So, I had a bright idea to combine some of the ingredients that I know help your hair into one hair mask.

I had heard about using eggs, or using mayonnaise.  I also read that cinnamon helps stimulate hair growth for those of us with thinning hair.  So, here we go…I decided to give it the old college try.  I can honestly say, my hair has never been shinier, healthier looking and softer.  I love it.  Even my highlights look less brassy and more natural.


So, without further ado, here is my recipe:

1/4 cup Yogurt (I used greek style yogurt since it is thicker)
1/4 cup of Mayonnaise
1 whole Egg
1 Tablespoon Honey
1 Tablespoon Cinnamon


Pretty simply mix all the above ingredients together.  Apply to dry hair (unwashed is fine), make sure to thouroughly massage into your scalp as well.  Cover your hair with a shower cap or plastic wrap and leave on for 1 full hour.  Then shampoo out with cool water and condition as usual.

I didn’t need to use but half the amount on my hair, so the amount you need will vary based on how thick and long your hair is.  If you won’t be using the entire amount, refrigerate the leftovers and use later on in the week to repeat the process.

You can do this up to a couple times a week (if time allows).

Benefits of each ingredient:

Eggs: Egg yolks contain vitamin A, B, D & E while most of an eggs protein is found in the white along with some bacteria-eating enzymes.  I use the whole egg, because 1) I don’t want to waste any part of the egg and 2) there are benefits to both parts.

Yogurt: The protein content in yogurt provides nourishment and strengthening to the hair without making it dull or dry. The zinc and lactic acid properties help stimulate blood circulation, which aids growth.  Yogurt also contains anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties that help stimulate hair growth by acting as a natural cleanser and helps get rid of unwanted dandruff from the scalp. The anti-bacterial benefits of yogurt for hair also help soothe the scalp and reduce itchiness.

Mayonnaise: Mayonnaise contains both eggs and oils, so the combo here just works.  If you would rather, you could substitute half the amount of just olive oil.  However, it will make it runnier if you do.  There is also a small amount of vinegar in Mayo, and that helps restore the healthy pH balance to your otherwise damaged hair.

Cinnamon: Cinnamon improves blood circulation in the scalp, strengthens hair bulbs and promotes hair growth.

Honey: Honey is a natural humectant, meaning it attracts moisture.  This is a good thing for your hair.  It’s also full of antioxidants and nutrients to feed hair follicles that house the live part of hair, encouraging hair growth.
