Homemade Pizza Rolls Main

Homemade Pizza Rolls are a Great, Healthy Afterschool Snack!

My kids love to come home from school and have a snack before starting their homework.  But why should it be something that is completely unhealthy?  Jump start their brains with these fantastic Homemade Pizza Rolls, that even they can make!  With ingredients you control, you can feed them something healthy, delicious, and fast.  What kid doesn’t like gooey cheese, tasty pepperoni, and a crisp shell holding it all together?

Make Homemade Pizza Rolls Ahead of Time

I love to take a rainy Sunday afternoon and make up Homemade Pizza Rolls with the kids, lining them up on a cookie sheet and freezing them for later.  Even on days when they beat me home, they can toss these in the oven to bake and have a snack on their own.  It’s simple for them, and they love the freedom of making their own snack.  Making something simple like these are a great gateway to getting your kids learning how to cook more involved dishes.

What Makes Homemade Pizza Rolls So Healthy?

Yummy goodness of mozzarella starts this out as a winner with most kids.  The calcium, of course, helps their bones, but the 6 grams of protein per cheese stick  gives them the brain power to get their homework done.  Add to that the low fat tastiness of the turkey pepperoni and you have a healthier alternative to the pizza rolls you buy in the freezer section.

Ingredients

  • 12 string cheese logs
  • 36 slices turkey pepperoni
  • 36 wonton wrappers
  • small bowl of water
  • cooking spray
  • pizza sauce

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Cut each string cheese log into 3 sections.
  3. Brush a wonton wrapper with water, just to moisten.
  4. Place a pepperoni slice in the center of the wonton, and top it with a piece of cheese.
  5. Wrap one corner over the long side of the cheese, tuck in the sides, and continue to roll until sealed, similar to wrapping a burrito.
  6. Repeat with remaining ingredients. (Freeze at this point if you like)
  7. Lightly spray a cookie sheet with the cooking spray. Place the pizza rolls on the cookie sheet and spray lightly with the cooking spray.
  8. Bake 5 minutes in preheated oven, then turn each on over. Bake an additional 5 minutes, until wontons are crispy and lightly brown.
  9. Serve with your favorite pizza sauce.

With Easter last week, I can see why this was the most viewed.  There are times when you need more than just 6 or 7 eggs at a time.
