Super Simple Sweet and Sour Red Cabbage
I was blessed with a family that loves cabbage. Pan “fried”, in stew, steamed, and even Sweet and Sour Red Cabbage are favorites that are fantastic for your your health and diet. Cabbage is one of those love it or hate it vegetables, but I have even turned people on to cabbage with my Sweet and Sour Red Cabbage. One of the best things about it is that you can make it on a weeknight for a quick side dish, or you can save it for the weekend and serve it in fancy dishes for Sunday dinner.
Just a Few Ingredients for Sweet and Sour Red Cabbage
Sweet and Sour Red Cabbage is full of amazing flavor even though it only takes a few ingredients. Fresh red cabbage, cut any way you like starts off the fantastic flavor. The sweet and sour flavors come in with some brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, and just a touch of butter. The whole mess gets steamed in some water and you have one of the tastiest side dishes you’d ever want to taste. The best part is it’s pretty darn healthy! Your whole family will love Sweet and Sour Red Cabbage.
- 1 head red cabbage, shredded
- 3 C water
- ½ C brown sugar
- 4 T butter
- ½ apple cider vinegar
- Place the red cabbage in a stock pot. Add the water and bring to a simmer.
- Simmer 10-15 minutes, until crisp-tender. Drain the water.
- Add the brown sugar, butter, and apple cider vinegar. Heat until the butter and brown sugar is melted.
- Serve hot.
Adding Flavor to Sweet and Sour Red Cabbage
You can add flavor to Sweet and Sour Red Cabbage in many ways. Diced crispy bacon or ham is a great addition and turns this from a side dish to the main entree. You can mix red and green cabbage (which will just turn it all pink) or you can use just green cabbage in Sweet and Sour Red Cabbage if you like. Most of the time, green cabbage is a bit less expensive, so it makes a great choice if you are on a budget. Sweet and Sour Red Cabbage is fantastic as leftovers too.
