Appetizers at restaurants can be expensive, but it’s pretty easy to make Restaurant Style Onion Rings at home!  I was doubtful, but I did a little research and came up with a great blend of recipes that made fabulous onion rings that are even good as leftovers.  The trick is the type of breadcrumbs you use.  I love panko breadcrumbs in recipes that I’m trying to get a crisp coating on something.  You can find them sometimes with the regular breadcrumbs, but often I find them in the Asian section of the grocery store.  They are a coarse crumb that lends itself well to Restaurant Style Onion Rings.

An Easy Process for Restaurant Style Onion Rings

To make the best Restaurant Style Onion Rings, there are a couple of steps, but they are easy and make an amazing ring.  The first step in any battering is to dredge the onions in flour.  This provides a base for everything else to bond to.  Once all the rings are floured, it’s time to batter them.  I made a traditional batter out of flour, egg, and buttermilk.  With the oil hot, batter the rings, toss them in some panko breadcrumbs, and put them right in the oil.  In just a few minutes, they will fry up golden and be absolutely beautiful!

Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet onions
  • 2 C flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1+ C buttermilk
  • 3 C panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 t garlic salt
  • ½ t pepper
  • Peanut oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Slice the onions into rings and separate.
  2. Place the flour in a large, flat bowl. Dredge the rings in the flour and tap off. Place on a plate.
  3. Heat about 3 inches of oil in a heavy bottomed stock pot over medium high heat, to 350 degrees F.
  4. To the remaining flour, add the egg and enough buttermilk to make a thick batter and whisk well.
  5. In another large flat bowl, mix the breadcrumbs, garlic salt, and pepper.
  6. Batter the floured rings, letting any extra batter run off.
  7. Coat in the breadcrumbs and place gently in the hot oil.
  8. Cook until golden brown, 2-3 minutes, turning if needed.
  9. Remove to a paper towel covered plate to drain.
  10. Serve warm.
