Superfoods – What They Are

You hear the term a lot around the internet and tv: superfoods.  Everyone from Dr. Oz to The Doctors is talking about them and how we need to be eating more of them.  But WHAT are they?  Well, like many things, the definition of what is a “superfood” depends on who you ask, but it gets down to one basic idea.  Superfoods are foods that have few calories, but are packed with essential nutrition and antioxidants.  These superfoods are a great way to maintain or lose weight while making sure you get the nutrition you need, when you need it.

Superfoods – Why We Need Them

There’s a lot of debate over whether it’s worth it to eat superfoods.  Personally, I find that since I enjoy clean eating, adding superfoods is an easy and delicious way to boost what I’m already doing.  (If you missed clean eating, check out our post here.)  It takes my diet from tasty and healthy to supercharged.

Here are just a few of my favorite Superfoods:

  • black beans
  • coconut oil
  • chia seeds
  • dark chocolate
  • eggs
  • mustard greens
  • blueberries
  • quinoa
  • nuts
  • sweet potatoes
  • red wine
  • turmeric (a delicious spice that adds wonderful flavor)

Cooking with Superfoods

There are a phenomenal amount of delicious recipes that use superfoods in ways that you wouldn’t be able to tell they are “healthy”.  Some people think that just because something is healthy, it’s tasteless.  I find it quite the opposite.  If the food is healthy and good for you, it has a great flavor that you can’t get enough of.  Over the next few days, I’m going to be cooking with superfoods and posting the recipes for you to enjoy.  A delicious Summer Quinoa Salad and Chia Cookies are first on the list!  Keep watching for Superfoods recipes coming up!
