$250 Neiman Marcus Cookies

$250 Neiman Marcus Cookies?  Seriously?

There’s been an urban legend going around for as long as I can remember.  A woman and her daughter were eating lunch at a Neiman-Marcus in Texas, and ate the most remarkable chocolate chip cookie.  It was so good, she asked for the recipe, which the worker agreed to give to her for “two-fifty”.  Later in the month, she received a credit card bill for $250.  To get back at the store, the woman spread the recipe far and wide.  Well, I did some checking and according to Snopes.com, the whole story is just that, a story.  The first version of it that has been found dates back to 1948, when the recipe was for a $25 fudge cake.  So, while the story behind the recipe may not be true, the $250 Neiman Marcus Cookies are well worth the time and effort.  The smiles you get will be amazing.

There are a couple of things that seem to set $250 Neiman Marcus Cookies apart from the rest.  The first is the usage of oats, ground into oat flour using a food processor or blender.  I don’t have any other recipes that require ground oats.  The second is the chocolate.  The original recipe calls for 1 package of semisweet chocolate chips, and a 4 ounce candy bar, broken into pieces.  I changed it up slightly with ½ package of semisweet chips and ½ package dark chocolate chunks.  I love the combination, and like my chocolate a little darker.  I still used the 4 ounce candy bar though for a little lighter flavor.

  5. Your chocolate chip cookies look wonderful! I have heard the story before, but I love how you’ve switched the recipe up with the different kinds of chocolate. There’s something wonderful about the contrast of milk, dark and semi sweet chocolate. And I like the idea of giving the cookies as a gift – there’s something really special about being given a homemade treat.
