World's Best Meatball Sub

The World’s Best Meatball Sub in your Kitchen

There are subs that you eat that are ok and then there are subs that are so full of flavor that you crave them.  The World’s Best Meatball Sub falls into that second category.  It’s not your usual sub of bread, meatballs, and cheese.  This sandwich goes further into the flavor zone by not using just any old bread.  I start out making garlic bread out of loaf of French bread, baking it so the garlic butter melds into the soft interior, infusing the bread with a powerhouse of flavor.  That’s the difference between a sub and the World’s Best Meatball Sub.

Making the World’s Best Meatball Sub

What goes in the World’s Best Meatball Sub is just as important as the vessel you put it in.  I started with Gluten Free Turkey Meatballs, simmered for hours in my favorite pasta sauce.  They were leftover from a pasta dinner I made, and I was happy I had extras!  I mixed up the cheese, with slices of asiago and mozzarella, for a great combination of sharp and mellow.  While you can use a premade garlic bread or even garlic butter, I find it easy enough to melt a stick of real butter and blend it with a bulb (not a clove) of garlic in my food processor.  I love garlic, so make it to your taste.  The fresh flavor is amazing and it’s so easy to make for the World’s Best Meatball Sub, or just for garlic bread any time!

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread
  • 1 batch garlic butter (1 stick butter, melted and whipped with 1 bulb of peeled garlic)
  • 9-12 Gluten Free Turkey Meatballs or your favorite recipe (or enough to fill the bread)
  • 1 C pasta sauce, or to taste
  • 4-6 slices of mozzarella cheese
  • 3 slices of asiago cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 425 degrees F.
  2. Slice the French bread lengthwise to make a pocket, leaving a little uncut to hold the bread together. Spread with garlic butter, refrigerating any leftovers.
  3. Wrap in aluminum foil and place in oven. Bake 10 minutes, until bread is hot and butter is melted throughout the bread.
  4. While the bread is baking, heat the meatballs and sauce in a saucepan until simmering, about 10 minutes.
  5. Place the meatballs in the bread, being careful not to cut the back portion open. Add sauce to your taste.
  6. Cover with cheese and place on a baking tray.
  7. Heat broiler and place sub under heating elements. Broil just until cheese is melted.
  8. Serve hot.
  9. Serves 3-4.
